Did you try the Unity2D session from the login screen?

There are a few options here

The default desktop for Ubuntu is Unity. Its OK if your PC is fast enough but I'm not keen on it.

The options are either start again with Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Alternatively you can change your desktop.

The downloads are here if you want to reinstall

Downloads are available here

Ubuntu:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/

Xubuntu:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/12.04/release/

Lubuntu:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/12.04/release/

Kubuntu:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/12.04/release/

If you want to keep your existing install try opening a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and one of the following

For the Gnome Classic look
    sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

For the KDE Desktop
   sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

For the Xubuntu
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop

Finally as pointed out above Unity2D is faster then the full desktop

The choice is yours

Unity 2D was not an option, it was too slow. I managed to start an xterm session and to install classic Gnome. Thanks!
