cant access tty;job controll turned off

2.8 gig P4 1gig ram 350sata, 200 ide (both partitioned) and 40gig ide, I'm brand new to ubuntu, I couldn't get ver 6 to run so I downloaded 7.04, it would't install till I put the 40Gig hdd in and disconected all other drives, got it runnuing staright away, connected all other drives and now, I get /bin/sh!cant access tty;job controll turned off, initramfs 43.621331 ata 2.0 failed to set xfermode err_mask=0.x40, so I put the live disk in and it does the same thing, being new to ubuntu I'm lost but am persisting. What I'm trying to do is have muliboot till I'm confident enough with ubunto and then get rid of windows.Pete, hope this is enough information.

Thanks for your question. I will try to understand. You didn't want to install ubuntu, so you have disconected the two big HD and have conected the 40gb HD. Right. You have used the livecd. But you have installed it on 40 gb hd or not ??? If you have done it fter you have insert the two big HD the problem was that GRUB didn't recognize the right partition table. You are now able to use the liv CD ??? Thanks

I tried to install ver 6 a few times but it hung at the login name so i gave up, I downloaded ver 7.04 and tried to install but had no luck it just hung early in the install. So I disconected the 2 large HDD and the live cd ubuntu loaded perfectly, and ran, its very good.When I reconnected the 2 large hdd, but booted from the 40gig now I get /bin/sh!cant access tty;job controll turned off, initramfs 43.621331 ata 2.0 failed to set xfermode err_mask=0.x40, so I put the live disk in and it does the same thing, now if the grub doesn't recognise the other partitions then I'm confused because I'm booting from the 40 gig, but why wont the live cd run? so I can try and understand why and then proceed to fix this weird problem.

Ok couldn't fix it this way, Ubuntu is good and am persisting, reinstalled and ran fine for a week or so then the same problem occurs.
This time after an update, after doing some research I have found that this guy seemed to have the same problem (279884) "Grub was aiming to the wrong partition (swap!) and thus it couldn't boot ubuntu properly. I replace the right UUID and it works! " Is this my problem?

How do I fix it? Being new to linux, assume I know nothing Is this a common problem?

I am not sure what to do to get into the root to fix this off the live cd and am i asking the right questions?

I understand windows pretty well but learning the command line is a bit confusing.

I would appreciate any help.
