why isn't hplip deb file up-to-date?

Asked by Udvarias Ur

I have 20.04 installed.

To the best of my knowledge hplip 3.20.3 was installed with it, by default.

I got a new HP Deskjet 2742e printer a few months ago, which I've finally installed.

According to the HP web site the minimum hplip for this printer is 3.20.5.

So the hplip installed WILL NOT WORK, and as it turns out is only partially effective. i.e. It will print only 1 page (possibly a job) and then is "Idle - The printer is not responding." After which it can't be used at all. Also the scanner is not detected by 'Simple Scan.'

Why hasn't the archive been up dated? It seems that every version of hplip since 2.8.6.b-3 is available as tarballs.

I thought the whole point of Ubuntu was that the user would not have to concern themselves with finding and updating all the dependencies in order to upgrade a package!

When you upgrade your Ubuntu installation from release 20.04 LTS to 22.04 LTS, you will get HPILP version 3.21.12

Ubuntu isn't a rolling release distribution and packages can be left in favour of stability.

If you grab the run file from the hplip website then this will update the service and may help. I suggest you remove the install hplip package so thet if the hplip package is overwritten then it won't undo your efforts.

I also found this PPA

https://launchpad.net/~d042888-2/+archive/ubuntu/hplip-3.21.8?field.series_filter=focal

Which is a bit sleeker and may help update the hplip package
