How do I get HPLIP onto my pc?

sudo apt-get install hplip

Done

Many thanks - but when I do that I get the message "can't find hplip" - or
words to that effect. Hmm, perhaps I'm looking in the wrong directory -
have you any idea how I can find out?

Bingo. You have had a cups version from somewhere else and it's throwing the packages out.

If you run:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo dpkg -P cups
sudo apt-get --reinstall install cups
clear
apt-cache policy cups

What is the output, please?

Just to let you know that I finally resolved the problem by:

1. Backing up my pc

2. Booting up a live Ubuntu 16.04 cd and selected the install option where
everything on the disk is wiped and then Ubuntu is re-installed - VERY
IMPORTANT to select ALL the additional software and the update with the
installation - I think the HPLIP stuff is amongst the "unsupported
software".

3. Reboot the pc and open a Terminal and write:

sudo apt-get install hplip (to install the app)

and

sudo apt-get install hplip-gui (to install the graphical-user-interface)

4. Reboot the pc and the HPLIP app (toolbox) will be found in the Dash
(top left of screen)

SOLUTION !
Managed to find the solution:

1. Backing up my pc

I would like to reopen this question. Am having the same problem on gnome 17.10. Have tried every thing listed above and even Googled it nothing is working.Have not tried to re install. Have filed a bug. It worked fine up until a couple days a go.The update removed it all. It will no longer install. Dependencies not met.,you have held broken packages. A work around would be nice.

17.10 isn't stable and isn't ready and isn't stable. I suggest you report a bug

#15 above. A bug report has been summited.I have stable systems installed.I just want to fix it if I can. I know that it should be fixed eventually. Was just hoping some one whose has the problem can suggest a fix.

I managed to fix the issue but can't remember how. I seem to remember that
I backed up, wiped and then re-installed Ubuntu - a real hassle.
