Additional information:

I have just discovered that my printer has a parallel printer/usb cable
which shows in lsusb as

Bus 004 Device 002: ID 067b:2305 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2305
Parallel Port

Not sure whether this is relevant.

Is it turned on why you ran the command? Do you have a parallel port on the system?

Yes to both of your questions. The printer uses a parallel port/usb
cable.

Tried parallel connection?

Not sure how to do this. The parallel port is greyed out in hp-install.

I finally got my 5mp printer working by uninstalling hplip-3.11.10. The story seems to have been that my printer was not recognised by ubuntu 11.10, so I installed hplip, but then an update of ubuntu meant the printer was recognised but hplip was getting in the way of printing. At least, that's what seems to have happened.
