every program i try to insall tells me my computer cannot install this program

hi i have just installed 7.04 and find apart from the expected wifi problem, the laptop refuses to install any new programs i attempt from add/remove i get the following
his application is provided by the Ubuntu community.
Windows Wireless Drivers cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type.
thishappens for games, firestarter or anything else with the exception of thunderbird which installed ok
