problem in start of every session

Asked by Karthick.S.M.E

hello...
i have just now upgraded to ubuntu 7.10....
a screen appears at the start of each session showing(at the startup).... "Hz?" scrolling across the screen....
this happens at the end of the session also(when i shutdown).... after entering everything works well.....
I thought it might be because of the screen refresh rate which showed 61... so i saw https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FixVideoResolutionHowto
and changed the resolution to 60.... but still im having the problem....

this is how my Section "Monitor" shows in /etc/X11/xorg
        Identifier "SyncMaster"
        Option "DPMS"
        HorizSync 30-55
        VertRefresh 50-120
im using a screen resolution of 1024*768
anyone help me solve this problem plz.....

When, exactly, do you get the Hz messages on your monitor? Does it only happen during startup and shutdown?

2)then Hz appears for few seconds....
3)then it asks for user name.... from here on every thing is normal.....
then problem comes only when i shutdown....

In that case, it probably has to do with the monitor not liking the signal being fed to it when you are not in X -- I am afraid that the changes you tried to make would have had no effect on the issue, since it seems to only happen when X is not running (during startup and shutdown). The long-term fix would be to change the refresh frequenct the video card is feeding the monitor while the splash screen is up, but I do not know how to do that off the top of my head.

To work around the issue, you can just disable the splash screen. As a bonus, you will get to see what the actual bootup process looks like (which I find informative). There are some pretty good instructions on how to do this here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/7197

O.. thanks vlowther.. now im bit comfortable that something is on screen...
but now i can clearly see that the screen resolution is 800*600 till it asks for password .. mouse pointer & every character is huge...
but after i typed the password it changes to the 1024*768...
is there any way any way to make is still better....
any way thanks a lot.... U just showed me that my system is alive... :)
