Serial mouse aren't autodetected in Ubuntu, see bug #9068.
You could add the requested information to get your mouse detected in future versions of Ubuntu.

Hello;
  Somehow I got on a list that receives these email and need to get off. The message at bottom shoiws "You received this question notification because you are an answer contact for Ubuntu." How do I get off this list?? Thanks for any help you can give! Pat
