Grub Error 15 after upgrading to Grub 2

Asked by Joe

I first installed Grub 2 as a chainloader following instructions from Kernel Team/Grub 2 testing. I verified I could successfully boot into Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows Vista several times. I then performed the final upgrade to Grub 2. I restarted and Grub fails to load:
Grub loading stage 1.5.

Grub loading, please wait...
Error 15

and everything stops. Looking at past questions of Error 15, it seems like the fix is to re-install. I am looking for a way to correct this without re-installing Ubuntu.
Thanks,
Joe

I tried following the procedure outlined in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1356854&postcount=6, but when I execute "sudo grub", I get the response sudo: grub: command not found.

I have booted off the Ubuntu 9.10 Beta desktop 65-bit Live CD. The was checked with md5sum and verified/checked from the disk itself.

I installed grub via "apt-get install grub". I next executed "su -i", then
grub

find /boot/grub/stage1

So I am back to where I started.

I followed the directions found in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows and rebooted. This actions cleared up this problem. Basically, installed grub from scratch and mounted the appropriate partitions.

I had this problem last night. Needed a few hours to definate exact problem...
So if after installing Ubuntu 9.10 after 9.04 via LiveCD (or after upgrade) on the last step of installation-config you should press on [Advanced...] and select there where should be installed your grub 2. Actually this will be your main partition like sda or sdb (where was previous version of Grub). Not sdb1 or sda2))) as I tried to do many times before))

Hope it will help to all red-eyes ubuntoids)

Anton:
I upgraded to Grub 2 following instructions posted by the Grub 2 testing team after upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10, not from Live CD. The upgrade askd me where to install it on sda and/or sdb. I chose sda since I knew that sda was the main drive. I am not sure the upgrade should be asking those type of questions for a straightforward upgrade.

Thanks for your comment. I reported this as bug 442667.
