Try it. Just press E on an item in GRUB and add the option then continue the boot. If it doesn't work then just reboot and do nothing. If it does work then you can make the option permanent by adding it, as usual, to the correct line in /etc/default/grub

@actionparship it did not work , got an error saying Error: Unknown Argument

but per community page documentation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Passwords) --users and -- unrestricted should ideally work, not sure if its a BUG

I also tried --users as argument i get thrown away with error "alloc magic is broken"

it works fine on Trusty (14.04)
