HPPavilion won't boot distribution CD/DVD/USB

Asked by Hal Hackney

HP Pavilion laptop will not boot the distribution CD/DVD/USB. I've tried 64-bit, 32-bit CD, DVD and now USB Stick. I get the same error. Error setting up gfxboot
boot:
Then it loops, flashes a message (too fast to read) and goes back to same error.
I have had openSUSE installed on it before and I am able to boot from the UBCD V5.0 so I know the CD works as does the laptop. This is specific to the boot program for ubuntu.
Help.

I've loaded the CD, DVDs on another machine, so I know the CD, DVD, USB are OK. I even created the USB with ubuntu after downloading the 32-bit on the ubuntu machine (Firefox) and using the Startup disk creator.

Could you try alternate installer which is text based. gfxboot is about graphic card.

After some Web searching:

Upon encountering the error, simply type "help". Installer proceeds to load as expected.

typing "help" at the prompt worked. Not being aware of this feature was the problem.

However, having said that, I will say that every other linux I've tried was able to boot without going thru this workaround. Must be something about the HP Pavilion hardware that is being overlooked in the ubuntu boot loader. Just saying....
