Ubuntu 8.10 error 18. Access my home files using installation disk.

I can't start my hd, error 18. So i am using the installation disk to access my files.As i cannot open my home files i have the option to import encryption keys. Where should i look for them on my hard disk so as to access my home dir and save my important files ? Thanks for helping.

You should have a regular backup if the data is important. What if the drive motor fails? Where is your data then?

May fix yourgrub error which is all that you are getting. The bootloader is having issues.

You are wright. The thing is that it someone else's backup. Can't i create a boot flex or disk so as to start up ?

If you read the grub2 docs:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

You may find out how to either repair the grub install or how to use the grub prompt to get a bootup.

Personally I would boot to LiveCD to reinstall grub and hopefully setup the new config for the system.
