ubuntu 12.10 making drives after installation

hi,

i bought a laptop with 500 GB hard disk and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it.

During installation it gave me an option to make drives after installing (or something like that) and skipped the core step of making drives and now i can see whole 500GB under Ubuntu 12.10 and I'm unable to make separate drives.

Please help..what can be done now.

I may only use Ubuntu and willing to make drives to store data on them so that there is less burden on the main drive and my system can run fast -- am i right in thinking so?

If you want to create partitions , you must use gparted.

Gparted is a tool that is PRE-installed in a Live Media (CD/DVD/USB) of Ubuntu.

So BOOT from the Live Media you have.. and open gparted then CAREFULLY select the driver and shrink it and create another partition..

I tried to resize my main drive but failed as I'm new to this. Is there any place where I can read more and understand how to do it properly.

I cannot see the sceenshots..

Use a free image hosting site such as : imgur.com OR imageshack.com to upload the images and give here the links.

You must boot from a live media of Ubuntu to do the "job" you want . The partition must be unmounted and can be unmounted ONLY from a Live CD/DVD/USB , a live session of Ubuntu.

You can resize partitions in LiveCD, they need to be unmounted
