GC 2.2.1 - Is it possible to import QIF files into existing accounts, rather than into a new account of their own?

Asked by Aaron Whitehouse

I have tried to find the answer to this question from Google, but I can't see it anywhere.

I used to use MS Money and would download the month's transaction data in QIF format. I would then open MS Money and import that month's transactions into the Cheque account that I had set up. MS Money would then go through, identify possible duplicates, guess which categories the expenses were and ask the user to make any necessary changes before lumping them into that Cheque account with the rest of the transactions.

In Gnucash 2.2.1, it seems that when I import a QIF file, it adds itself as a completely new account.

Is there any way to import a list of transactions from a QIF file into an existing account?

It remained open without activity because nobody helped me on Launchpad.

For the sake of others, I received this answer on the mailing list:

Yes. You need to use account, category, and payee/memo mappings to get the imported transactions to go into the right GnuCash accounts. There are three steps in the importer that help you do this. The interface isn't the friendliest at the moment, I'm afraid, but once you've created the mappings, they'll be saved for future imports so you don't have to go through the whole process again. I'd suggest that you turn on the QIF documentation pages to get more help as you go along.. Go into the preferences (Edit->Preferences), then pick "Online Banking", and make sure "Show documentation" is checked.

Once you've got that working, the importer will try to find any potential duplicates and will give you a chance to review them and accept/reject them individually.

I would also suggest upgrading your GnuCash when you get a chance. Many QIF importer bugs have been fixed recently.

Cheers,
Charles

Closing now that I have put in that information - hope it was useful.
