in terminal on ubuntu 10.04 i can't load realplayer because terminal won't type my password

According to help my converted ibook g4 (ppc) should load realplayer through terminal. the shell is keith@keith-laptop and at the command prompt i enter sudo chmod a+x RealPlayer* and then enter. the next line says password for keith but when i try to type the password no password letters appear on screen. i am trying to load codecs to run my DVD/ CD-ROM RW drive

Lucid is EOL on the desktop. There are zero packages for it and zero community support.

I suggest you either upgrade to Precise or (ideally) a clean install of Precise. This will give you support til April 2017.

Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS can be found here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/

Download the appropriate .iso (AMD64 = 64bit OS, i386 = 32bit OS).

Ubuntu Lucid for desktop or Laptop is not supported anymore. (only the server edition = without graphical environment)

Just one additional explanation (valid for any Ubuntu release):

When you type your password as requested by the sudo command, you will not get any feedback, no echo, not even '*' placeholders. Just type your password 'blind' and hit 'Enter'.

I quote from that rootsudo webpage:

"Usage

    When using sudo, your password is stored by default for 15 minutes. After that time, you will need to enter your password again.

    Your password will not be shown on the screen as you type it, not even as a row of stars (******). It is being entered with each keystroke! "
