How to deal with typos in launchpad translation that do not come from gnome sources?

Asked by Martin Ott

When adding fields to task list of gnome-system-monitor, then estonian translation for field Status should be at least "Olek" instead of "Oleks" (which is definitely another word. not a noun even, represening kind of wishful thinking like "could be").

Please look for example following:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/gnome-system-monitor/+pots/gnome-system-monitor/et/199/+translate

The problem actually appears to be even bigger. It seems to me that launchpad translations for gnome applications (rhythmbox and system-monitor at least) in general won't make it back to gnome estonian translators. Could something be done against it?

Should I report all typos into launchpad instead of gnome bugzilla? For example following report:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=566243

The rhythmbox example (totally different word in launchpad translation):
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=565555

When I could choose, I would definitely prefer "original" gnome translations to launchpad ones. Currently at least for estonian translations, when finding another mis-typed one from Ubuntu, I would need to carefully choose whether the typo comes gnome translators or launchpad instead. First case is resolvable by reporting bug to gnome bugzilla, for second one I have not yet found any good way to report or fix it...

Could you please help me getting rid of launchpad translation-typos?

Where else should I look for a solution? The typos are still there. Should I attempt to connect to the launchpad translator itself??

Hi Martin,

Ubuntu translations made in Launchad are not automaticaly send to upstream, in this case in GNOME.

If you want to make them availalbe in GNOME you should export the .po file from Launchpad and work togheter with the Estonian GNOME team: http://l10n.gnome.org/teams/et
Please try to contact Priit Laes and see how you can colaborate.

If the error is not only in Ubuntu , but also in GNOME (or in other upstream project) you should report it there.

If the error is only in Ubuntu, you should talk with the Ubuntu estonian team: https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-l10n-et . They could fix the problem in Ubuntu.

Also I recommend joining the Ubuntu estonian team and talk with them and see how you could work togheter and fix Ubuntu, but also GNOME, or other projects :D

If you have any other question, please ask!
