Upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic causes ubuntu to load in recovery mode. Suspend does not work either

hii, i'm running a samsung nc10 and have just upgraded to karmic (via update manager) from jaunty 9.04. two issues (aswell as other logged under 87660)

1) when I select ubuntu from the o/s opeating system choice (i dual boot) ubuntu seems to go into recovery mode by default and a black screen appears with lots of scripts. to start the GUI i have to type startx. likewise when I shut down the black screen appears and I have to hold the power off buttom to shut down. (i dont know the command to shut down using a scrip) this is not right and I'm concered about the impact this has on my hardware.

2) the suspend function no longer works. i normally use FN+ESC and now this does not do anything. if i use the mouse and select suspend from the list of shut down options the screen goes black but the pc does not suspend. my wireless stays active and the hard disk is still running?

can anyone help with this? i've logged other problems and at this rate I'm afraid I'll have to roll back to jaunty if possible until everything gets sorted out, or give up everything in the last 8 months and go back to windows. this upgrade has really caused some issues for me. hope someone can help here
