lose battery status and ability to change brightness after resume on hp DV7 laptop

Asked by Mikeyj

I have a hp DV7 1270ca laptop with Ubuntu 9.04 installed. everything works great except when I resume from suspend, the battery status indication is no longer responsive when I remove the power cord. It says plugged into ac power, no battery detected.
also my screen will not dim when idle or when I unplug the cord. and I cannot dim using my function keys, until I restart the computer... once I restart everything works properly.

Hi Mickeyj,

You should try to reproduce this issue with the upcoming Ubuntu release named Karmic : http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/beta

Maybe your problem is fixed in Karmic which is planned to be release on October 29th. I'd suggest you to only test using the liveCD if you want to avoid reinstalling Jaunty.

If you still have the issue in Karmic LiveCD, I could help you fill a bug report.

I have downloaded and ran 9.10 beta liveCD. when I click suspend, my screen turns black for about 3 or 4 seconds and then the desktop returns and my wireless lan is disabled. If i click suspend, hibernate, nothing happens.

You should try the procedure here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend

I would also suggest you to make sure you're using the latest BIOS from HP (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?sw_lang=13&lc=en&dlc=it&cc=it&lang=it&product=3860666). I don't know if the latest BIOS will help you with your problem because I can't see the changelog. But in the past, I've seen such issues being fix by BIOS updates.

Your battery problem is potentially related to a problem with gnome-power-manager. I would suggest to try this procedure https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager

The brightness problem can also be related to gnome-power-manager but you should check it's not a hotkey problem by following this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting before and after resume.

Can you help with this problem?
