I have a panel on each side of the screen and they expand, how can I get rid of them?

I have 10.10 installed on an Acer netbook. Somehow I got a blank black rectangular shaped panel on each side of the screen. It expands from top to bottom as the curser touches it. I would like to remove them to give me more screen space...
