Wifi connection works for a few hours but stops after that.

Asked by Kaustubh Singh

Wifi connection works for a few hours but stops after that. The settings show wifi as connected but it comes with question mark symbol on screen and stops working. I've tried a lot of things from a lot of forums but it simply refuses to work, here is the diagnostic output:

Reboot and the log in as usual. When the wifi drops, press CTRL + ALT + T to launch a terminal and run:

dmesg | tail

What is the output, please?

Try:

echo "options rtl8723de ant_sel=3" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723de.conf > /dev/null

reboot to test. If it's not better, or there are issues then rerun the command and change the 3 to another integer number from 1 to 4. Rerunning the command will create a new file each time. To fully wind out simply delete the file with:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723de.conf

Hello, sorry for the late reply. I tried this on all 4 antenna settings and nope, still shows the same issue after some time. Also now on starting Ubuntu it shows the message "error : Driver "rtw_8723de" is already registered, aborting..."

You seem to be running a foreign kernel (version 5.19.11-051911-generic ) from outside Ubuntu.
Have you considered installing the Ubuntu HWE kernel (linux-generic-hwe-22.04, version 6.2)

Revision history for this message
Kaustubh Singh (kaustubh717) said :

Like I said I already updated my kernel, this is the response to uname -r "6.2.2-060202-generic". So I don't think updating the kernel is fixing anything.

Revision history for this message
Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said :

The driver for the WLAN device is part of the kernel.
6.2.2-060202-generic again is a foreign kernel from outside Ubuntu.
If you are using a non-Ubuntu kernel, then you cannot expect a solution on the Ubuntu answers pages.

Does this problem occur with the connection to one specific router, or any router you connect to?
Can other devices connect to that router without problems?

Revision history for this message
Kaustubh Singh (kaustubh717) said :

The wifi stops working for any router, the wifi symbol is replaced by a question mark. The router works perfectly for every other device and the wifi works fine on the dual boot windows without any issues. (Ihave already disables fast boot). Coming to the kernel I got it from kernel.ubuntu.com. What exactly do you mean by saying it is from "outside ubuntu"?

Revision history for this message
Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said :
#11

The kernel that you are using is not one of the kernel versions dedicated for the Ubuntu release that you are running and that are available in the standard Ubuntu repositories (for installing with "sudo apt install ...")
The version number of your kernel looks similar to those from kernel.org, without anyUbuntu-specific modification

Revision history for this message
Kaustubh Singh (kaustubh717) said :

Can you tell me where to install the kernel specific to my OS? I installed this kernel from the official Ubuntu website (kernel.ubuntu.com). The HWE packages are intermediary kernels, all of their features get rolled into the official kernel update the happens every 6 months.

Revision history for this message
Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said :

You install the Ubuntu-provided kernel packages in the same way as you do for other packages: with the package management tools.
e.g.
sudo apt install linux-generic
or
sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-22.04

Additional remark:
Your output
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS"
shows that you have not installed all available updates (the command "lsb_release -crid" should already display 22.04.3)

I did sudo apt install Linux generic and after running uname -r it still shows 6.2.2-060202-generic

If you want to change to a kernel version with a lower number, then you have to do more steps:

1. install he new kernel
2. reboot, and during the next boot process select the version that you want to boot into from the grub menu ("advanced mode")
3. uninstall the kernel with the higher number to avoid that it automatically is selected for the next boot (or select the desired kernel by editing the grub configuration).

Intermittent Wi-Fi issues can be frustrating, but there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to try to resolve this problem. Here's a list of common steps to help you diagnose and fix your Wi-Fi connection:

Restart Your Router and Modem:

Unplug the power from your router and modem.
Wait for at least 30 seconds.
Plug the power back in and let them fully restart.
This can often resolve temporary connectivity issues.
Check Other Devices:

Are other devices on the network experiencing the same issue? If not, it might be a problem with the specific device you're using.
Forget and Reconnect:

On your device, forget the Wi-Fi network and then reconnect to it. This can clear any temporary issues.
Update Wi-Fi Drivers:

Ensure that your device has the latest Wi-Fi drivers installed.
Check for Interference:

Interference from other electronic devices or neighboring Wi-Fi networks can cause connectivity issues. Make sure your router is on a clear channel.
Change the Wi-Fi Channel:

Log into your router settings and try changing the Wi-Fi channel to reduce interference.
Reset Network Settings:

On your device, you can reset network settings to default. This will remove any customized network settings but can sometimes solve connectivity problems.
Check for Firmware Updates:

Make sure your router's firmware is up to date.
Power Management Settings:

Disable any power-saving settings that might be turning off your Wi-Fi adapter after a period of inactivity.
Check for Software Conflicts:

Ensure that no software or apps are interfering with your Wi-Fi connection. Sometimes, third-party firewall or security software can cause issues.
Run a Network Troubleshooter:

On Windows, you can run the built-in network troubleshooter to identify and fix common network problems.
Check for Physical Damage:

Ensure that there are no physical issues with your router, modem, or the cables.
Factory Reset the Router:

As a last resort, you can factory reset your router and reconfigure it from scratch.
Contact Your Internet Service Provider:

If none of the above steps work, there might be an issue with your internet service, and you should contact your ISP for assistance.
Consider a Wi-Fi Extender:

If you have a large or complex home, you may need a Wi-Fi extender to improve coverage.
Upgrade Your Router:

If your router is old, consider upgrading to a newer model with better performance and coverage.
Consult a Professional:

If you're still experiencing issues after trying all of these steps, it might be time to consult a professional technician or the manufacturer of your router.
It's important to be patient and methodical when troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues. Start with the simplest steps and work your way towards more complex solutions if necessary. If you're unsure about any of these steps, consider seeking help from a tech-savvy friend or a professional technician. By https://www.ufabetwins.ai/
