i can not install anything with ubuntu 8.04 because a dpkg error message comes up every time.

Asked by dantheman1090

I have just recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 and am downloading updates and such but every time i try an error messages such as follows appears:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I tried opening a terminal and ran "sudo dpkg --configure -a" and then it asked for my password which it said was incorrect. I then proceeded to try it without the sudo in front and it said i need "superuser" privileges. What should I do to correct this?

Converting this bug report to a question, as this is an easily fixed support issue.

Nick Ellery suggests this article as an answer to your question:
FAQ #52: “'dpkg --configure -a' problem when trying to run Synaptic”.

Hello

To correct this problem just open Terminal (Applications → Accessories → Terminal) and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Give your user password when requested. You will not see anything, but type it and press enter.

Then retry to update and/or to install desired package.

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

I had been facing the same problem. And i tried : sudo dpkg --configure -a.

however this is what I got:

dpkg: error processing evolution-exchange (--configure):
 Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
 reinstall it before attempting configuration.
Errors were encountered while processing:
 evolution-exchange

Anybody got any suggestions on how to remove this bug and reinstall synaptic package manager??

@Bhavani Shankar.

Thanx a lot for your suggestion. It's working fine now. I just have one more problem. I have a Compaq Presario V3035TU laptop . I have installed Hardy Heron through Wubi 8.04.1 . However, I am not getting any sound from my computer when I boot it in linux. In windows it's working fine. Can you give me some suggestions on how to repair this problem?

I tried $sudo lspci

and i got
