Will GIMP 2.6 be officially available for Hardy?

Asked by KushalSharma

I haven't upgraded to Intrepid Ibex. I figured that since Hardy is a long term support version, I will have access to all the updated software that is available for Intrepid. However, I see that GIMP, whose latest version is already shipped with Intrepid, is still not officially available for Hardy. Is there any particular reason for it or will it be available anytime soon? I know there are different ways to get it done on Hardy, however, if I can get it through regular updates, I would rather wait for it.

If anyone has any idea about it, please let me know.

Gimp will not be updated to the 2.6 release during the 8.04 LTS life cycle as only updates that are security or pass the Stable Release Update (SRU) criteria.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

Packages like the GIMP are updated by volunteers as a backport and I think 2.5.x is currently in the backports repo for 8.04.

For info about backports see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports
