can't switch users on 11.04

Asked by Sjaak Adriaanse

I run 11.04 on a Compaq Presario CQ60.
When I want to switch users, the screen shows an 'Enter password' dialog where I can not enter a user's name. It has a 'switch users' button but that returns me to this same dialog. All I can do is enter my own password, then I return to my own desktop. There is a notification saying 'The name org.gnome.DisplayManager was not provided by any .service files'. I have to click this away as many times as I tried to switch users (1 time from the menu, maybe more times from the dialog.)

It sounds like it's going to lock screen mode instead of the login screen. Do you have at least one other user already set up?

The first thing that happens when you switch users is that it locks your current login. It then displays the login screen which is the bit that does not appear to be working.

Does the login screen work normally when you first start Ubuntu, and can you log into the alternate user account?

Hi Chris,

There are 2 other users. They can login from the login screen. It appears when starting Ubuntu and when logging off. So all users can use the computer, but only one at a time, others need to logoff.

Hi Marco,

This is a bit too terse for me. What do you mean?

OK, try this. Instead of just switching users, first lock the screen - it's on the same menu, at the top. You will then get a dialogue box where you can type in your password, but you also get a button "switch user". Try clicking on that and see if it will let you log in as another user.

Chris.

Can you help with this problem?
