Does the problem occur if you access YouTube! using a different web browser? (For example, if you use Firefox, you could test this with Chromium, which you can get by installing the package called chromium-browser in the Software Center.)

Does the problem occur when you log on to your Ubuntu system as a different user? If you only have one user account, you can create a second one to test this?

Using a different web browser or different user account would be a very inconvenient workaround, and is not intended as a solution. However, knowing if the problem is browser-specific, and knowing if it is user-specific, will help greatly in narrowing down the cause of the problem.

Normally, I would say that you should start a new question about your problem in Rhythmbox (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+addquestion). However, I wonder if, in this case, the problems do have a common cause. In addition to providing the above information, please also tell us if the problem in Rhythmbox is user-specific (i.e., if it goes away when you log in a a different user on your Ubuntu system, and run Rhythmbox). Please also tell us what the CPU and memory usage is like when you are experiencing the YouTube! and Rhythmbox problems, and what programs are using what amount of CPU and memory (you only need to provide the top few). You can view this graphically in the System Monitor, or in the Terminal by running top (http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/en/man1/top.1.html).

The problem still occurred using Chromium,
I have to figure out how to access a different user account,
I tried switch user and it would not authenticate a new password for that account or accept the password I use for my user account.
I only bring this back as the CPU usage is at 100% continually in system monitor resources page
as I typed I realised that the video I was watching might still be running without sound and though it had finished I loaded a non video page and the CPU usage fell to low 30's% it is operating at between 50 and 70% whilst typing this,
memory usage appears stable at 334.2 MiB (33.4%) of 1002.1 MiB, that's all from resources page
on the process page the only process showing CPU usage are Xorg between 2 - 9 and 20% and gnome-system-monitor that is using between 15 and 64%
I don't have enough technical skill to tell you beyond that, for instance the "top" link whilst it is very interesting and a start point for me to further my interest in Ubuntu I could not utilise it,
I can put a piece of code in the terminal and that is really my limit currently.
I will go sort out how to switch user accounts I saw details in another question/answer here at Ubuntu flashplugin-nonfree.
Just checking the CPU usage graph again it reaches 100% seemingly easily & fluctuates between 60-100% whilst doing this and rests in the low 30%.
I did only mention the rhythm box issue consequential to its similarity to the flash problem

Thanks

ok, logged in as guest, the sound still drops out leaving video running without sound
system monitor monitored whilst the video played
plugin container 30-40%
pulseaudio 4%
dbus daemion 24%
when the sound dropped the plugin container rose to 54%
pulseaudio dropped to 0
memory was 373.8 MiB 37.3% whilst video was running
I will go get this data as guest on Chromium

could not launch Chromium as guest, tried to close system monitor, couldn't, had to restart computer.
still wouldn't launch Chromium as guest after restart

I tried rhythmbox as guest and whilst I will leave these details unless there is some connection then I will do as you said and deal with it as a separate question, where I will re-post these details
it seems to jump or drop beats as playing
at the end of the first track it stopped suddenly then went to track 2 that stopped leaving the error message "disconnected connection terminated" with a no entry sign notice, a different error message than earlier
it did this twice then stopped playing whilst the slider moved faster than linear time, it would not play any more tracks from the cd, it continued moving slider faster than linear time and continued doing so through track list and also did so when I chose any other track, it wouldn't even play the track it did play at first.

Is there any chance that I have hardware issues as I only got this machine yesterday and apart from minor glitches I have been seriously impressed with this 10.04 LTS program on my previous machines, though from the start after loading this machine with it, replacing ubuntu 9.04, I have issues with my microphone volume and I noticed my camera was lighting up whilst watching videos, I disconnected the camera and microphone in case that was the cause of the sound drop outs, it made no difference
mentioned for reference I will deal with each issue separately.
Thanks

after realising I did not monitor system as requested whilst using rhythm box as guest I reloaded cd
it played first track until end when it left pa_stream-writable_size() failed: connection terminated - error message
played all track 2, jumped past track 3 error message pa_stream_cork() failed: connection terminated
played track 4, track 5 stopped same error message as track 1
CPU usage for rhythmbox jumped to 31% momentarily
played 1/2 track 6 same error message as (1) didn't play track 7 and 8 same error message as (1) track 9 played part of track then stopped
the pulseaudio CPU usage jumped to 100% memory n/a at that point

system monitor processes page rhythmbox 15% CPU 28.6 MiB as said jumps up to 31% CPU usage on glitch
pulseaudio 3% CPU usage 1.2 MiB rose to 100% at glitch (if that's the right term) wasn't able to reference the memory figure

system monitor resource page when playing
CPU low to mid 60's%
338.9 MiB 33.8% of 1002.1 MiB

Whilst I have your ear a simple question, are hard drives machine specific with Ubuntu O/S, meaning can I take the hard drive out of my last machine and put it in this one without needing to reload the program?

Thank you very much

If you grab the 32bit linux tar.gz from www.adobe.com and uninstall the flash packages you have installed, you can run:

mkdir ~/.mozilla/plugins

and put the .so file in there, see if it helps

On looking to uninstall flash I find in Ubuntu software centre that I haven't got flash installed, well not flash 10 as advertised there, what occurred was after loading the operating system I went to youtube and was told that I did not have the correct plug ins and I installed the first one of 3 advertised, intending to get the other 2 after the first one installed.
previously I have encountered this, the offering of 3 plug ins and have had difficulties when not getting all, though to do that I had to do some combination of backpaging (using those arrows on the browser tool bar) anyway I could not remember how I had previously done that and last night after loading the first plug in as always it acts as though you have the required plug in, which anyone with some techno savvy would have (I am a reformed Luddite) and the others that where advertised are not obtainable or I don't know how.
anyway, I checked the other questioners and someone had been directed to uninstall what they had and install what I have got, I followed the instruction, well I had no account then.
anyway
have you got the line of code for uninstalling flash via the terminal, do you suggest I follow your earlier suggestion, I have found the web page, I am a little confuse as to what order to do the task in do I upload the "32bit linux tar.gz" first then uninstall?? or uninstall then upload? and then is putting the .so file in self explanatory? if not I need instruction on that also, or try flash 10 via Ubuntu software centre?
forgive my ignorance I have no excuse I know.
Thank you

now I uploaded the flash player at software centre and the output of that initial line of code states

ii adobe-flashplugin 10.3.183.4-0lucid1 Adobe Flash Player plugin version 10
rc flashplugin-installer 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.10.04.1 Adobe Flash Player plugin installer

I put mkdir ~/.mozilla/plugins in terminal there was no output and I have no understanding of putting .so file in there

at the adobe website it also isn't very clear, I put 32bit linux tar.gz in the search box which took me to a page offering many downloads that talked of 64 bit and things again I don't know what any of that means.
I will muddle through with this though any extra assistance will be appreciated
Thanks

ok lets do this my way:

sudo apt-get --purge remove adobe-flash-properties-gtk adobe-flashplugin; sudo dpkg -P flashplugin-installer; wget http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz; mkdir ~/.mozilla/plugins; mv install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz ~/.mozilla/plugins; tar zxvf ./install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz; rm ./install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz; rm -r ./usr

Then close all firefoxes and rerun the browser, should be ok

I will get back to thank you or pester you some more.
Thank you I appreciate your input and thanks for the time, this exercise has shown me potential that I did not realise Ubuntu had.

It is difficult to tell if there is any actual improvement, more shorter videos are playing through, though I just watched a 1 hour bbc program on their i-player and the sound dropped out @ 5 mins 15 mins 30 mins 31 mins 35 mins 43 mins 49 mins and 52 mins, that was using Chromium browser, the firefox browser carrying youtube has played approx 5 videos 3 of them the sound dropped out 2 didn't the longest being 7 mins, prior to this patch to-day, the sound would play for anything between 90 secs and 15 mins which is much the same as the i-player experience i have just had.

Thanks

any thoughts? as the sound still drops out regularly
