What is the output of this command?

uname -a; cat /etc/lsb-release; apt-cache show google-chrome-stable; sudo apt-get update

You will need the 64bit deb, unless you are using some other architecture. The commands given by Mark will clarify the situation

Original poster created a new question https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+question/263178 showing that the installed Ubuntu release is 11.04 which is end of life and not supported anymore in any way
