Hi! if you are in Karmic the best way to install Firefox 3.6 is the
following, open a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and
write the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install firefox-3.6

This version is built using the official mozzilla tar, and it works
like a charm.

For other version, please follow the instructions on this link:
http://groups.google.com/group/ubuntu-user-community/browse_thread/thread/6577a034c6afc2dc?hl=en#

Hope it helps!

I think, on linux, firefox you downloaded ain't a zip file. it should be a tar.bz2 file.

You can extract it in any directory such as Downloads or home directory.

Yes, it is a "tar.bz2" file.  I used the archive manager to extract the files to the desk top.
Then I cpio'ed the files to "$HOME/.mozilla".  My cpio solution did not work.

I tried the "sudo" routines mentioned by Federico Vera, but that did not work either.
Mr. Vera mentioned something about "Karmic".  What is Karmic?

Why won't the archive manager handle this?

Hi! Karmic is the current Ubuntu version (a.k.a. 9.10), those three sudo commands install firefox 3.6 in your system (just in karmic).

In the link that I posted (http://groups.google.com/group/ubuntu-user-community/browse_thread/thread/6577a034c6afc2dc?hl=en#) there's a step by step description on how to install Firefox 3.6 for all the Ubuntu versions. If you don't know which version of Ubuntu you are running you can check in "System->Administration->System Monitor->System"

Compiling a tar to install an application might be a little to advanced for regular users (besides why compile it again when the job is already done =?)

hope it helps!

I made a shell script called "fixins" and executed it with "sh -x fixins".
Here are the output results.  After running the shell script, The Firefox about

Hi! when you ask a question Launchpad sends a couple of links to you from which you can mark the question as 'solved' (by a particular post or by yourself). The only thing for us to do from this side is mark the question as invalid (which doesn't make much sense because it's a perfectly valid question), or wait for the launchpad janitor to mark it as expired.

I'll let the janitor take of it.

Did the apt-get commands poke the update manager?

mmm... sort of (actually they are basically the same application),
update-manager is a "part" of synaptic (like software sources), and
synaptic is a graphical front-end of apt, so you can say that in a way
apt 'pokes' the update manager.

Would the update manager have installed 3.6 without the "apt" runs?

I don't think so, it's possible that this update actually perform the installation, seeing as the last time it wasn't done (as you posted on 2010-02-01).
I believe this doesn't matter very much now... at least you manage to get Firefox 3.6 installed!
