I loose my settings each time I boot from USB drive

Asked by htschinkel

I boot up Ubuntu 9.04 from my USB flash drive on my laptop which also has Windows XP. Ubuntu works just fine for me this way. However, the next time that I boot up the same way from the USB, all the settings that I created are gone. This includes all the bookmarks, evolution mail, files saved to DOCUMENTS, etc. It is very annoying to have to recreate the settings after each bootup. How can I avoid this so that the settings are saved?

When creating an Ubuntu USB boot stick with the tool included in Ubuntu you will be asked if you like to reserve space on the device to store your settings or if you like to discard all changes on shutdown. It looks like you have chosen the later option.
Recreate your USB boot stick and choose the first option on the bottom of the dialog, then choose an amount of space you like to reserve. If you are using the stick for Ubuntu only move the slider to the right end.

You can see the option Thomas Krüger is talking about ("When starting up from this disk, documents and settings will be: - Store in reserved extra space") in next screenshot:

Thanks for the quick response. Very useful suggestions. My flash drive now works like a charm and retains all settings. My mistake was that I created the bootable USB flash drive with the program: UNetbootin . I could find nowhere in that protocal where it gives me a choice for retaining settings.

This is the first time that I have posted a question about Ubuntu. I'm impressed, very efficient.
