You could try opening a command line terminal and typing:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

This will install flash player + multimedia codecs, may resolve your issue.
If not. What type of file is the e-mailed slideshow you have. Do you know if the video/slideshows are flash video? or what format they are in and what plugin is being used to play the files in your web browser? And what browser are you using?

I already have this installed.
I'm using Firefox browser.
I don't now what plugin os being used and the slideshow is from kodak
gallery. I'm assuming that its from a picture cd.
This also happens on tv channel websites that offer online tv and news.

the one place i've been trying is ctv.ca/canadaam
On the right is Jeff's videos. I get a blck screen with an arrow init
and when click on arrow just get a black screen and nothing happens,
same as the link to the picture slideshow in my email. I know its has
something to do with Firefox, but cannot figure it out.

Lori,

These are videos playing in flash. Please right click on the blank video and click on 'About adobe flash player..' This will take you to a page that shows your currently installed version. Please tell me the version it says.

Also in Firefox go to 'Edit' -> 'Preferences' -> Applications and type flash in the search box. Should show 3 entries I believe. Please also tell me what is says for each 'Content Type' & 'Action'.

I right clicked the black screen and I got swfdec 0-6-0.
under applications I get:
shockwave file (application/x-shockeave-flash)
shockwave file (application/futuresplash)
Action is:
use shcokwave flash (in firefox)
use shockwave flasj (in firefox)
I hope this helps
Lori

Yeah i think that solves it you need to remove swfdec.
Try this: Close Firefox. Open synaptic package manager and remove any of the following packages that are installed:

swfdec-gnome
swfdec-mozilla
libswfdec-(version number)

Then install:

adobe-flashplugin

then open firefox and try again.
