Flash Video not playing

Asked by hearthand

OK....one more time today...5th post...about ready to tear ubuntu right out of the computer by its code....

I can't seem to get most video to play...
On youtube, the ENTIRE screen "greys" and hangs....
on NYTimes, just white screens where the video should be except for the ads...
on Daily show and Colbert just white boxes....

I have Adobe Shockwave and Flash and SWFdec0.8.0...and all "seem" to be loaded and functioning....
I've found talk that the codec for SWF may not be working properly and used the add and remove tool and it "appears" to be removed...but it still shows up when I click on the videos...I can't find clear instructions to remove it anywhere....

Ideas... or do I scrap this tonight...?

32bit is probably better for you. 64bit still needs someone with a bit of previous linux experience and some knowledge of different repositories and stuff. I have 32bit on my 64bit machine and it does all the multi-threading and everything fine so it really uses both my cores very well. Also it seems to use a lot less ram so i haven't been able to manage to push it up to the 2Gb limit. Try the 32 bit Desktop editin from here
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download

Also make sure you aren't installing it inside Windows using the Wubi as that is only meant for short-term, light weight use - you need more
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
this makes a much more robust and flexible system

Once you've done that follow this guide to get full multi-media stuff sorted out in one go
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
although i'm not certain it fully deals with sound nor graphics driver for your graphics card.

Hope this helps! For me it was 5th install lucky, but the first couple of times i tried Mandriva, and i didn't go to their forums, so i guess it doesn't count heheheh
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi,
which Ubuntu version?
Please try to avoid running different versions of flash player, because of conflicts, dependencies and usage of older versions.

Please open Synaptic
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto
search for flash, gnash, adobe, swfdec
right click -> remove completely

Option to install flash: ##Firefox is closed.
Intrepid x86:
via Synaptic
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/Flash
add repository Medibuntu
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Option with caution ##I use amd_64, Hardy and have no problems with alpha flash version of adobe
Create a folder 'plugins' in .mozilla (hidden in your /home/user)
Download latest flash version for 64bit system architecture
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

Unpack and put the libflashplayer.so in the folder 'plugins'.
Finished. Start firefox.

Anytime there is an update just remove the old libflashplayer.so and put the new version into 'plugins', that's it.

Which flash player?

I've just watched 'Easter parade' without problems, but of course java scripting enabled.
With addon 'Noscript' you can enable scripting temporarily and btw. have several control mechanism.

As suggested above, correct path would be: ##firefox should be closed
/home/matt/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

that IS the path..."/home/matt/documents/install_flash_player_10_linux/libflashplayer.so"

it isn't working- are you saying it should read differently? I'm misunderstanding apparently(?)

Hi,
what do you mean by 'that IS the path'. Are you telling me Adobe flash player installed to this path itself?
What has 'documents' to do with firefox? How is firefox supposed to know that libflashplayer.so is in that folder?
Again as suggested, please just copy libflashplayer.so into the folder 'plugins' (path mentioned above).

I don't know WHY it's says its there, but it is and it seems to know it's there and so apparently does Firefox, it has been using it since I uninstalled the SWFdec codec......I'll try to copy it into the path you suggest and see where I get...Thanks Sam...

WF-I tried to install the .deb file and I get an error telling me it's not compatible..I am not as familiar with Ubuntu/Firefox as Windows/Ie7 so this is a bit of forward stumbling for me.....

Again thanks for the ideas...I'll keep you posted...

Ok, we do talk about 64bit?
If yes, please tell me if you've tried this.
If yes, please tell me what is complicated, hence what should I explain better, thanks.

Quote from above:
Create a folder 'plugins' in .mozilla (hidden in your /home/user)
Download latest flash version for 64bit system architecture
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

Unpack and put the libflashplayer.so in the folder 'plugins'.
Finished. Start firefox.

Please note, that this manual installation will not be updated automatically. You'll have to check the page for version updates. Then you remove the old libflashplayer.so and put the new one in the plugins folder, that's it.

Again, please try to avoid installing .deb, .tar or whatever flashplayer all together at once for testing. Better said, remove the flashplayer which isn't working on your favourite pages and install the next one.

Hi Sam and WF-here's the update since this am...

Sam-I did the new plugin folder and moved everything there...No changes...I can see and play video on NYTimes, Hulu, and YouTube...Not the Daily Show/Colbert...MTV networks...

I took Windows Fucker's advice and tried to install the Linux Upgrade for Ubuntu and got the same error "invalid architecture i386" when I did....The .deb file seems to be incompatible with my system for some reason....There's something odd about the page with the listed players...i can't quite put my finger on...but it looks wrong...

Anyway...I can live with the system the way it is right now...I'm going to try to uninstall the flash player and install again fresh in the morning when I have more time...this has already taken enough from all of us ...
Thanks again for your help and patience.

Ok,
whatever flash you install, please tell us exactly from where, how and which package.
Please note case sensitives. The folder in .mozilla calls 'plugins' not plugin.

Please post terminal output of:
uname -m

lsb_release -d

ls .mozilla/plugins

ls /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/

ls /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/

Here's the post of the terminal output for you...

x86-64
ubuntu 8.10
install_flash_player_10_linux install_flash_player_10_linux.tar-1

cannot access usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/: no such file or directory

cannot access usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/: no such file or directory

Funny...when I manually look at the "usr/lib file" " flashplugin-nonfree" is clearly there...
there isn't an adobe-flashplugin file however...

Matt,
the output of
ls .mozilla/plugins

shows acutally that you have two archive packages in there and not libflashplayer.so (because it's unpacked).
It seems also you still have flashplugin-nonfree installed (via Synaptic).

First, again close firefox on any procedure installing/removing flash.

It's your choice which package to keep, either libflashplayer.so packed in .mozilla/plugins or flashplugin-nonfree. BUT you should remove one (reasons mentioned above).
Background:
Intrepids flashplugin-nonfree is acutally a 32bit with wrapper software.
This one here is a 64bit only:
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

Case #1
remove the archives in .mozilla/plugins manually and keep the official flashplugin-nonfree
Nothing more needs to be done.

Case #2
Precondition: only if downloaded from the link above.
remove official flashplugin-nonfree (completely) via Synaptic
remove one of the two archives in .mozilla/plugins
Move (cut&paste) the one remaining archive to the desktop
Right click 'unpack here'. Now one single file appears: libflashplayer.so
Move this one file only into .mozilla/plugins
Done.

hearthand (matt-heartinhandmassage) said :

ok...so
I removed the flashplugin-nonfree using Synaptic...
I removed the files in .Mozilla/plugins
I unpacked the new flash player from the link (libflashplayer_10.0.22.87.linuz-x86_64.so.tar.gz) to the desktop and moved the unpackaged file to the .mozilla/plugins file...
so now there is one file for the flashplayer - libflashplayer.so

And now the Mozilla Firefox program won't stay open with any screen with a flash video on it....The screen opens and closes....
Did I remove something accidently I shouldn't have?

Sam_ (and-sam) said :

Recalling the steps you've described - no accidental removal and it should work, but I don't sit beside you though.
Please check outputs again:
ls .mozilla/plugins ##should be libflashplayer.so

ls /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/ ##should be empty

ls /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/ ##should be empty

##Please note that commands are case sensitive, you may copy&paste.
In your output above:
cannot access usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/: no such file or directory
is '/' missing in front of 'usr'.

If there is still failure on flash sites consider to rename firefox profile.
Backup your bookmarks and libflashplayer.so file, anything else will be gone. So in case you may take note of your extensions to reinstall them.

##Firefox is closed

mv .mozilla .mozilla.old

Restart firefox.
Now firefox has created a new .mozilla folder.
Close firefox again and copy libflashplayer.so into the plugins folder again. If not there create this folder again.
Restart firefox.

Finally update Ubuntu:
##copy&paste; also you wont see anything when typing your login password

sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get autoclean

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade
