Hi, Well if you are really new on it, I will try to explain you easy.

Open the Synaptic, (System > Administration > Synaptic)

It will ask you or your password, enter it, then a window will be open, ok now will find a package, please type <Ctrl><F> Key ad same time, then the Find window will be open, type in the Textbox:

  ubuntu-restricted-extras

And click search or find buttom.

You will see that the list of package will change and will see the ubuntu-restricted-extras package, now you may do double click or rigth click and select GREEN Mark or Mark for install.

When you finish, just try the Apply Btn. In the Tool Bar.

If you wanna try in the command line (Terminal), open it (Application > Accesories > Terminal)

Then type.

    :~$ sudo aptitude install ubuntu-restricted-extras

This package will install a lot of applications like, Flash Players, Video and Audio Codecs, M$ TT Fonts, Java and more. and will be easy work with your Ubuntu.

PLEASE, remember that all this software installed by the Meta Package IS NOT SOFTWARE LIBRE (Free Software).
