flash player plugin for Linux Firefox x86_64

I have Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron - released in April 2008 on my machine, which is fine. However when I try to install flashplayer I get this error. Your architecture, \'x86_64\', is not supported by the Adobe Flash Player installer. The flashplayer i downloaded was this one install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz. I chose this because I couldn't see any more appropriate should I be trying a different one, and can anyone tell me which its. Thanks.

You either

a) need to download the "64 bit" version of Adobe Flash Player

Or I recommend an easier method:

b) Go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. Search for:

flash

Now scroll down and install (by double clicking each package)

flashplugin-nonfree
flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound

After you're done, and they are checked, click "Apply" in the toolbar. Wait for it to finish. A browser restart is required.

This should install Adobe Flash that matches your system specifications easily without having to mess with a tar archive file or anything else from Adobe Software. :-)

Here's another easy method. I have done this myself. Download the latest Flash Player (x64) from here http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer10/libflashplayer-10.0.22.87.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz

After doing that, extract the archive and you will find yourself with a 9.1MB libflashplayer.so file.

Now all you need to do is, go to your home folder, Click on View->Show Hidden Folders. You will now see many folders in addition to your own. Try and locate .mozilla. Inside that folder, there should be directories like firefox, extensions etc. Search for a directory 'plugins'. If its not there, create one and copy the libflashplayer.so file we obtained from the archive inside. Now restart firefox and test the flash player functionality by opening YouTube and you will see the video streaming !

Thanks Craig, I didn't find the 'flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound' bit only the 'flashplugin-nonfree' but it works now.
I can watch BBC news items and also youtube great.

One thing I still can't do though is watch NASA TV which Iike to use. Do you know if its possible to get that to work.
