Adobe Flash player doesn't load videos even though it is installed and seems to be running

Asked by Collin Stocks

I know that Adobe Flash player is non-free, but I am using it anyway since Gnash doesn't work with all websites.

I have flash player installed, and it seems to work with some sites such as adobe.com, but it refuses to load flash video and seems to have some other problems as well. In any case, it will not run videos on youtube.com, and instead only shows a grey or black rectangle where the video should be. When I right click it, it says "Movie not loaded" and the usual "About Adobe Flash Player 10..." link.

Here's a screenshot: http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/3836/screenshotyoutubeabitofad2.png

Of course, the flash on Adobe's website all works perfectly...

Okay, anyway, I'm running on a brand new system76 Pangolin Performance computer with a Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26 GHz 1066 MHz FSB 3 MB L2 (25 Watt) processor (it's 64 bits, in case you couldn't tell).

I have tried removing flash completely and then reinstalling it, but it still doesn't work.

I'm going to try the 64 bit alpha version of flash from http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html and post back here if that works. Obviously, though, that is not the ideal solution for now, since it is still alpha.

Ahhhhhhhh, it feels good to have solved this problem!

It seems to be that there were two versions of flash: one in ~/.mozilla/plugins and one installed the normal way. Once I removed the one in ~/.mozilla/plugins, it immediately started working.

I hope that this helps someone else!

By the way, I couldn't figure out how to get the 64 bit alpha version of flash to run, but I solved the problem in trying, so I'm stopping here with something that works.

uhm.. total newbie here. I have had UBUNTU 64 bit installed for about an hour. Never worked with Linux before. Firefox 3.0 says I need flash player and I tried to down load it for Linux but got "wrong architecture" so I found and downloaded the "beta" from Adobe labs. I sit with libflashplayer.so sitting in a desktop folder and no clue what to do with it.

Can anyone help? Thank you.
