NVIDIA video glitches

Asked by darkraven

COMPIZ and NVIDIA latest 7300 GT drivers are buggy.

first install COMPIZ just crashed firefox and left it grey at random times.the app never recovered nor could I force quit, except thru xkill on terminal.I had to force reboot the machine to get it back to normal.

xkill works no matter what.
sudo kill or kill command works sometimes.

my titlebars keep glitching [disappear/reappear] or go funky colors randomly.
this is lessened when taking the 'orange' out and switching to a blue theme, but never goes away completely.

seems to be a COMPIZ bug. 8.04 runs okay, but doesnt have the Zydas driver[RT73 wifi] that I need, so I upgraded.

i cannot reproduce on PPC ibook as the install CD wont install or demo. The alt-installer as well hasn't been updated in ages.both downloads are supposed to be daily builds[ppc].

i've gotten the updates for intel x86 32-bit though.I cant use 64-bit or I loose my scanner.[32bit drivers]

no other major issues with the OS.

I have this problem on my machine too. It affects many people who have nvidia graphics cards with compiz turned on.

Firefox will sometimes crash when changing themes or turning on/off compiz.

The graphical glitches issue is a well documented and long-lived problem caused by some bugs in the nvidia drivers, or compiz, or xorg. It has been in ubuntu for many releases, but is much worse in ubuntu 8.10.

Here is one of the many duplicate bugs that talk about it:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-177/+bug/186382

The only way to fix this would be to:
1. use the previous version of ubuntu 8.04
2. turn off compiz
3. use a different theme
4. wait for code fixes

Other themes have less glitches. If you install the package "community-themes" you can use themes such as "Dust" or "Kin", which are a little less buggy than the default theme.

Can you help with this problem?
