E: dpkg was interrupted

Asked by Davidmhanson

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Linux runs great.
I like this OS a lot.

The problem is that after running Ubuntu 8.06 for a few days the package handler quits working.
I get this message...

"E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."

I don't know what this is all about, i cannot install any further software now.

It says to please report, so here is your report.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Dave

Hi Dave

That means there's a problem with the backend system that configures packages on your system. Specifically, it's been stopped half-way through doing something. What you'll need to do is to bring up a terminal (GNOME terminal in GNOME, or Konsole in KDE), and issue the command it gives you: "dpkg --configure -a" (without the quotation marks). That should sort it out.

This might be a wishlist request--when the package manager says that, maybe it should offer a button to click to do so, or even maybe just do it by itself. Are you using synaptic as your package manager?

Thomas

Great, This is a great support community. I did not expect such quick responses.
Awesome, I think i just may like Linux! :D

I hope it works, this is what came up...

david@david-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
[sudo] password for david:
Setting up java-common (0.28ubuntu3) ...

Setting up odbcinst1debian1 (2.2.11-16build1) ...

Setting up unixodbc (2.2.11-16build1) ...

Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
david@david-desktop:~$

I hope that solves the problem!

@cledio
Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

Under applications,
I use 'Terminal' under your accessories.

I tried using these commands because I have a similar problem & it is not working for me. Hope you have better luck. I can't do a thing on my computer except use my Firefox browser.
