Yes, Hardy is only supported on the server. It is EOL on the desktop. There is no more support and no more packages for Hardy desktop. I suggest you reinstall with a clean install or Precise (if you like LTS support) or Quantal (if you like the latest features).

If you want to use the latest Firefox with an EOL Ubuntu version (like 8.04) you can do it via the binary file of Firefox.

Download latest firefox from here :
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/

save file something , eg: Downloads

Then right click and extract here.

Then connect to Firefox folder and run the binary file : firefox

right click => open => run.

I would very strongly suggest you upgrade. Not only will you be able to get the latest firefox you will get other updates too.

There are many versions depending on what you want and the specification of your PC you should be able find one you like.

Version 12.10 has been released (last week or you may want to go with 12.04LTS) which has been around longer. Personally I would stick with 12.04 for now because more people have tested it. If you go for 12.10 then you may need to use a USB stick as some on the images are too big for a standard 700MB CD.

The good thing about Ubuntu is that all versions are "try before you commit"

Ubuntu expects a reasonably powerfull PC , Xubuntu is a little less resource hungry so will be faster, Lubuntu has the most basic desktop but its still very useable.

You may find Ubuntu runs slow on older PCs but Xubuntu should be OK.

I suggest you try each of live CD first, Make sure everything works then when you have chosen the one you like do a full install
