Which release did you upgrade from?
What method did you use?
Can you ping 8.8.8.8?

I upgraded from ubuntu 14.04 LTS
I upgraded from the pop-up box that said " there is a new version of ubuntu version 16.0, would you like to upgrade?
i just reinstalled ubuntu 12.04 from a CD on my laptop, i am going to wait for the dialog box to appear again to upgrade to 14.04, then upgrade again to 16.04 , then i will let you know if i can ping 8.8.8.8.8

I suggest you clean install Bionic. It is out soon and is LTS. It is supported until April 2023.

same issue with me. I tried to upgrade my ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 yesterday.
There is no internet after the upgrade (wifi, wired connection, tethered usb or bluetooth)
When the login page appears there is a status message saying that the computer connected to the internet. 2 seconds later there is another one saying that it is disconnected. After the login the computer is switched to airplane mode. I can switch on the wired network and the wifi, but there is no effect.
I disabled the IPv6, but it didn't help.
$ cat /etc/network/
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
there is an extra line in this file in my debian server:
source /etc/network/
if I don't restart the network it looks like:
$ sudo nmcli d
DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
wlp2s0 wifi connected UPC95F5DE2

after the restart
$ sudo nmcli d
