Hi, could you please post what sound card you have. You can do so by going to System --> Administration --> Device Manager. Maybe you could also try submitting your specs to the Ubuntu Device Database once you open Device Manager.
Here is a list of some known supported sound cards:
https:/
Please note that if yours is not on there, it may still work.

By the way, does sound not work at all, or just with a specific program?

Hi, what make and model of computer do you have?
It would also be useful for us to know what sound card you have. You may be able to find this out in device manager under windows.
Alternatively boot to ubuntu then go to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal. Maximise the window then type the following command in it:-
lspci
It will list some of the hardware devices in your computer. You might see a sound card listed. If you have an internet connection on the Ubuntu machine you could copy and paste the result of typing that command here.
So for example on my wifes computer I see a line with the word "Audio" in like this:-
0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio (rev 12)

Interesting, it doesn't even ask you for your password? After running
the command, have you tested your sound?
Revision history for this message

No, it does not ask me for my pass word. I have tested the sound
with devic manager and sent the results to the data bank, For what ever good that will do. I thank you so much for your help and any that you give in the future. I've been trying to eleminate this problem for some time. I will not give up on it. Again I thank you. harry

Hi, I am still trying to get my sound card to work. I managed to get it to work yesterday, but I don't remember how, and when I rebooted it was not there anymore. It is listed on this support page. Will you once again try to help me install it. als100

Do you think that it was something that you entered into the terminal that corrected your issue? If so you can open up the terminal and press the up arrow key to see commands that you have issued previously.

Thanks for making me smile!!!!!!!!!! I spend hours trying different stuff, I could buy a new card, but I am persistent. This one will work and I am learning at the same time, I am 61 years old, and disabled. So I have plenty of time. Although; I have a bachlors in nuclear medicine and ran some very complicated computer programs, I always had someone to ask. Those programs are alot different than Windows or Linux. I will post some thing from dmesg. Will you please tell me what to do about it???????? [17179569.184000] Local APIC disabled by BIOS (or by default) -- you can enable it with "lapic" It is recognizing the game controller on the same card so there isn't any reasn why I should not be able to get sound to work. I sincerely appreciate your help harry
how do i use lapic?????????????

In the terminal, enter
sudo gedit /etc/modules
and add
snd-als100
on it's own line.
I think that is all you should have to do.

Hi Will; When I typed, sudo gedit /etc/modules snd-als100, into the terminal, I got the following.
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

The box had two tabs. I think I was supposed to paste it into the tab with, snd-als100, on it. Is that what I am supposed to do. thanks harry

Using 'sudo gedit /etc/modules' will open up the text editor, you will add the line snd-als100 to the bottom and save the file and it will look like this:
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

I used the commands he showed me, rhey worked. however I didn't check to see if the driver was installed they were. I just didn't check to see. And they were not reloaded when I booted.
