which version of ubuntu are you running ? could you please provide make/model of the printer.

If you open printers (in system settings ) is your printer in the list when it is plugged in and powered on?

Thanks

1. Open a terminal CTRL+ALT+T and give us the output of

---------------------------------------------------------------------
lsb_release -a; lsusb
---------------------------------------------------------------------

2. What is the make and model of your printer

3. If in a web browser you enter http://localhost:631/printers
is you printer listed?

The printer is listed on the screen...all of my test pages are in the queue. I deleted them and tried reprinting but they lined up again.
I am using a dell mini inspiron. I think, if I'm not mistaken, the version of Ubuntu is 2.22.3. I cannot seem to update it because whoever set it up for me originally set up a password. I have the original disk but it doesn't have a dvd drive (yuk). I can go online but not sure how to update ubuntu with out the password. Everytime I get a notice to update something, it requires the password so I haven't updated it. :<)

1. The version of Ubuntu is not 2.22.3. Ubuntu version numbers don't work like that. The output from the commands in post #2 will tell us which version of Ubuntu you have and also if the computer can see your printer

2. We need to know make and model of your printer.

3. You will need to know your password at some point. You can reset it however

First find out your user name. If you don't know already open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and enter

whoami

Next reset the password

There are a few methods (mostly similar) take a look at these

The version of ubuntu is 8.04 The printer is an hp laserjet 3300. It appears on the list. Everything sits in the print queue but I went in and deleted all of them. I didn't set up the system and therefore don't know the password. I am trying to figure out how to reset it ...can only work on it when I get a break...I use a windows system by birth... :<)

Ubuntu 8.04 is no longer supported as a desktop and server support will run out in a few weeks time: this April.

I therefore highly recommend you upgrade to the latest LTS release Precise 12.04.

Take a look at both Xubuntu and Ubuntu as since you are running 8.04 its possible that you may find Ubuntu too slow on your hardware. Try both from a live CD or USB and install the one you prefer. Support for HP printers is good in recent versions of Ubuntu so you may find this fixes your problems. If not feel free to ask again and we will try to assist further.

I would recommend you backup your personal data then do a fresh install.

The download for Xubuntu is here:
http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/

The download for Ubuntu is here:

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Candace Lauber for more information if necessary.
