PDF downloads but will not open in new window

I have been using Ubuntu for a few years and all is ok. I have been always updating changes as they come in. However, problem now is when I try and open a PDF file say from a website, it does not open in a new window but rather just gets saved to desktop. I even tried right mouse click "open in new window" but because website has disclaimer etc and you must hit ok first, it still just saves on desktop. I want to adjust settings so it opens in new window

Do PDFs from other sites work ok?

Well, on another website, when you click on the PDF to be downloaded, the download bar comes up and tells you what % etc it is loading etc and when I see this I can "interrupt" and click on the "time bar" and the PDF then opens in window. But if I don't interrup it, it saves to desktop

only Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu.

Thought to try a different browser or two, see if it is only firefox which is affected...?

I may have a breakthrough. A friend advised as follows:

In Firefox go to Edit-->Preferences-->"Always ask me where to save file"

Too basic for you I guess (I am non IT as you can see!)

ACTUALLY THAT DID NOT WORK!
One friend advised:
I would hazard a guess that firefox has updated itself and possibly invalidated whatever plugin you were using to read PDFs in the browser

I have to type this into "console"

sudo apt-get install mozplugger

but where is console?

Press CTRL+ALT+T or press SuperL (Windows key to you) and search for terminal. You can run it there. If you get an issue with an application, try another one which is similar to see if the issue is isolated to one app
