How do you set up Empathy for a QQ account

Asked by Richard Mark Rostron

The only FAQ relating to QQ on this site just says "set up the account". How is this done? What kind of chat account do I need to set up as none of the options look relevant?
Alternatively, is there an instant messenger on UBUNTU which links with QQ accounts?
At the moment I have to boot into windows to use QQ which is a real pain.

Pidgin can connect to QQ.

Empathy is also supposed to support QQ. I've seen mention of having to specify the client version as qq2008.

I don't use QQ, though, so I can't try myself.

I recommend web.qq.com, which will hook you up to qq through your browser. An old issue with qq is that it is closed source and very, very commercial, whose software is infamous for sending viruses, spyware and everything else. QQ constantly "updates" (i.e., changes protocols) and makes any pidgin or empathy solution invalid. The web solution allows you to use qq without all the risk, nor all the constant changes with a pidgin or empathy solution.

Can you help with this problem?
