dpkg-reconfigure extra options

You could intest try dpkg --configure -a, which seems to be more intelligent.

does dpkg --configure -a do reconfiguration??
i always thought of it as like a backup process when a package installation has failed to manually restart the configuration process
"intelligent" there are times i have found it dumb doing a "get-selections" install had to run it several times to configure some dependencies!

Oh yes of course. --configure -a is used when a system update fails due
to dependency problems, so no it won't reconfigure already set up
packages. dpkg in general is sometimes a little stupid because it
doesn't check dependencies beforehand like yum does. Anyway, why do you
want to reconfigure all the packages on your system? Have you been
having a problem with something?

ya, i have one system randomly giving system crashes and i cant find whats causing it, may be many causes!
and another system not loading gdm on startup; tried lightdm, reinstalled and reconfigured gdm, xserver-xorg and several other packages. yet to try xorg.conf from knoppix, but thats another issue

You could try removing xorg.conf altogether, as X will just create a new
autodetected one to replace it, and that might fix it. But do make a
backup first in case. I'm not realy sure about your issues, are you
using the nouveau drivers or similar fairly unstable drivers for the
video card?
