Can't see you tube or bbc iplayer

Asked by Barbara Maver

My i player and you tube were working fine until recently. Now I just see a blank space. I tried removing the flash player and installing it again. I tried another player but the bbc site asked for the flash player so I installed it again. I removed recent history. I did the janitor clean up. I updated the system but still the same. No sound or picture. The sound is OK on downloads so the speakers are working ok.

I would like to see the I player and you tube and hear them. I can't think of anything else to do. Any advice?

Hi Jeet
is there a way that you can tell me this that is suitable for someone who hasn't a clue what to do? I don't know how to run a command. I don't even know how to get started.

Thanks

Barbara

ok try this

CLTR+ALT+T (it will open a terminal for you )

then copy paste following command

sudo aptitude purge mozilla-plugin-gnash

it will ask you for password please provide your password by which you logged in.

then start firefox .. hope it will work

Cheers

Thanks for your help. I got the terminal opened and pasted in the command. Unfortunately when it asked for a password and I typed in the one I logged in with it told me it was incorrect on three attempts and when I tried again the same.

Where do I go from here?

Hello again.
I managed to do what you said and got the password to work this time but it hasn't made any difference to the you tube.. Still not working.

When i was trying myself I did install gnash but it didn't help and I removed it.

Looking forward to hearing if you have any more advice. I was wondering if I reinstalled Ubuntu it would help. I'm not sure how to do it though.

best wishes

Barbara

Now I have done an upgrade to 11.04 and still no you tube. Just to be sure I opened the terminal and pasted the command again. No you tube still. I'm still hoping for some help.

Cheers

Hi Jeet

I opened a terminal and pasted in the command at #9. Is that what I should have done?

It hasn't worked.

Can you think of anything else?

Cheers

Barbara

You have 2 flash plugins installed. This causes a conflict and you get issues. If you run:

sudo apt-get --purge remove adobe-flash-properties-gtk adobe-flashplugin browser-plugin-gnash gnash gnash-common

sudo dpkg -P flashplugin-installer

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get clean

sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

Close all web browsers and rerun, should be ok
