Bug? file browser self-opens over and over

Asked by Jud Ruhl

my file browser opens my home folder, or parts of it several times within any given time, or even when I'm not at the computer. I have to manually close as many as 10 open file or folder iterations often. I don't know if it has anything to do with this, but I had installed a new hard drive and Ubuntu 9.04 on this machine and used my current old hard drive as a slave so that I could transfer files to the new program. I had a lot of problems with that including the one I'm reporting here.
I removed the new hard drive, reverted to the original one, and upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04. Would having a second hard drive with an operating system, but booting from the first cause this kind of problem, and if so, since I've removed that hard drive, why does it still persist?
Compaq pressario 6330US Intel Pentium 4, Ubuntu 8.04

Just to clarify. You were 'dual booting' between two versions of Ubuntu located on separate hard drives. You have since removed one of the hard drives and thus one of the versions of Ubuntu. Am i understanding OK?

Was this external hard drive a usb hard drive?

After removing the second hard drive did you do a clean install or just an upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04.

1. I wasn't dual booting--just using the old hard drive as a slave.
2. I removed the new Hard drive with 9.04 installed. Eventually I plan
to work on the issues that it had.
3.It was an internal HD, ATA form factor.
4. When I upgraded the original HD, I had 7.10 installed on it, which I
upgraded to 8.04, in the hope that it would pretty much work without
tweeking.
In both instances I was simply trying to upgrade an OS that's not
supported and get later software like Mozilla 3.0+, and be able to keep
all my data.
Thank you for your interest,
Jud

What an interesting issue.

Can I ask you some stupid questions first? Yeah? Thanks!

Is there any chance you are hitting a key on your keyboard or other device, something like a home key, that spawns this? Or perhaps a key combo?

You can check what will trigger opening up a folder by going to:

System->Prefs->Keyboard Shortcut

There should be an entry for "Home folder"

The answer to that is no. That should not of had an adverse effect on your system.

When these windows come up what directory are they in?
when a drive disconnects, nautilus should navigate to the directory immediately above it (or the first directory that actually exists). It is acting like a drive that is unmounting then remounting.

After this has happened type the following into Terminal (Applications > Accesories > Terminal)

dmesg

and post the output here.

Good question, not a stupid one, ain't no such thing. However, my Home
folder shortcut is disabled. I am noticing that this doesn't happen all
the time, in matter of fact, last night after I posted this, no folders
opened for a long time, enough to make me wonder if it wasn't going to
do it again and make me a fool. But then, my home folder opened and then
the 4 gig thumb drive I have mounted, and then my home folder about 6
times till I had to close a bunch of them because my active open files
were being minimised.
My sound quit working the other day, so I reported that on the chat
line, and then it started working later. I surmised that I had had some
upgrades installed , but I'd re-booted a time or two, then once again
before it started working. I have thought this issue could be realted to
that, but no cigar. I've re-booted a number of times. I do think that
there's a trigger though , going back to it doesn't happen and then
there are lots of instances. I've been trying to notice what activity
might precede the onset, but nothing has grabbed my attention.
Thanks for your attention and for spending time working on these things

It seems like my home folder comes up first, then the 4gb thumb drive I
have mounted USB. Then the home folder opens again. and again. I hadn't
been paying attention to the sequence, but I will now. Paul Tagliamonte
asked me if I had a shortcut tied to the file browser, but I checked it,
and it's disabled, I guess by default, 'cause I didin't set it. I copied
my terminal below:

Exactly what am I seeing on the Terminal window? Is this a record from
last bootup? I notice that there are a lot of redundancies. UT163 is my
thumb drive. I notice that there's a massive FAT failure in 2 places.
What does that indicate?
This problem did come up when I had the other hd installed and was
booting from it. Only then the Jud Home folder would come up, the UT
163, then the second hd, as a storage device.

I wonder if there's an issue with the thumb drive. I unmounted and
removed it. Are they not supposed to be more or less permanant? i had
that one on there to move picture files to. We'll see if that makes a
difference.

I unmounted the USB flash drive and removed it, and not had any trouble since. Thanks for helping me out. I learned something here.

Looks like you are having bus power issues.
The USB Thumb drive connects, mounts, then disconnects intermittently.

This message you are getting:
[100234.952287] FAT: Directory bread(block 512) failed

Is the vfat driver "soft" locking up because of a sudden disconnect of the drive during a subsequent read or write action being performed on the disk. Most likely a read.

Have you tried another USB hub/port to see if the same issue happens? Ideally one that isn't being shared by other devices.

Regards
Iain

This is interesting. Taking the thumb drive out cured the problem, but
your question prompted me to check more thoroughly. I didn't know what
the FAT directory entry meant nor how to get there until one of the
other respondants had me invoke dmesg. Anyhow, when I plug the flash
drive into another port it doesn't recognize it, but that same port
found my camera all right and the port I had the flash drive also
recognized the camera. That indicates to me that all the USB ports are
functioning all right. When I unmounted the flash drive(I didn't just
pull it out) I got the shut down screen . I wonder if that flash drive
has issues. If the drive is being disconnected, it's not because I'm
doing anything to it, but it definitely is the problem. I thank you for
getting back to me, even though I had marked this problem as "solved" It
wasn't really quite solved, after all, because I didn't know what was
really going on.
Sincerely, Jud
