geforce fx5200 error --> 'can not display video mode'

Asked by daninch

Using geforce fx5200 on a dell dimension 4600, intel processor. Ubuntu version 9.04. Proprietary drivers for fx5200 have been installed.

Running games in WINE brings up a black screen with the message 'Can not display this video mode'.

Games are age of empires and call of duty 2, both of which are gold or above on the WINE games database for this distro of Ubuntu.

Am new to Linux, and not sure where I am going wrong - any help?

thanks,

Dan

Do you have the manual? In the back of the manual they usually have a specifications table which lists the horizontal sync range (in KHz) and the vertical refresh rate (in Hz).

Try it out

Hi Bhavani, thanks for your interest but not sure what to do with the help. I don't have a manual, (for game, monitor or computer, not sure which you mean...) so have no idea what values to enter

I suspsect the problem may be the fact that the games use DivX, everything else, inc. desktop effects is fine with the video card

Have have this with some games if I do not match the game resolution to the desktop resolution.

Have you consulted the wine appdb for your game to make sure it will run ok. Also make sure you use the wine from the wine repos.

Hi as said in original post, games checked on wineHQ, both should be fine. Is not possible to gett/set game resolution as COD2 fails before any menu screens come up, AOE is more or less the same. It seems that when the games try to set up their own video environment it all falls over. I am pretty sure this is not a WINE problem as other MS applications (eg spotify) run fine with it. Using WINE1.1.26 at the mo.

thanks for looking :)

try running the games in some safe mode then configure video from there. You could also try running

winecfg

and use different settings

I have a 5200 card too...if you have not done so, try using the 96.43.x.x driver..I have trouble using the 173.* driver....Good Luck

Can you help with this problem?
