Media players

Asked by Omar. P

I keep asking this same question, probably my fault because I can't seem to figure it out. I can't seem to watch my videos or DVDs on any media player. I just probably need to install the necessary software's. So can someone please provide a list of what I need to run mpg or mpge videos and DVDs please?

For multimedia issues, this page has useful information: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Hi :)

Working through all the steps in this guide usually fixes all the multimedia
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

I seem to remember there were problems working through it? Please let us know where it starts giving error messages. I think it's important to start out using restricted, proprietary, non-free formats and once that's working to gradually move over to the more experimental OpenSource to see if any of that is possible.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

ok, I'm sure I have all the necessary software, but it still doesn't work. I was able to watch a couple videos, but it seems to work for a while.

Hi :)

It doesn't hurt to work through the Medibuntu page a couple of times just to make sure. Also try installing MPlayer through Synaptic
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto

also do you know what graphics card you have got? It might be a good plan to see if you have got decent drivers for that. I'm not sure how to check for OpenSource drivers but you can see if you have a proprietary one by going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Hardware Drivers

and just let us know what it says in there.

When you start watching a normal movie it starts and then the movie window disappears? Please try getting to a command-line
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal#Starting%20a%20Terminal
and open a movie player from there. For example type in

totem

then try dragging a movie onto the totem window and when totem crashes copy&paste the output that is in the terminal window into here. Did it say much?

Sorry i'm not much good with multimedia. Hopefully someone who knows more about this should pop in later
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
