Banshee does support media transfer protocol (MTP) is this option enabled in this mediaplayer? In rhytmbox (pe) it is possible to enable MTP and use it as a mediaplayer.

no, rhytmbox does not see it.

it is because ubuntu sees it as an ordinari usb-stick for storage. how do i mount it as an MTP?

try installing gnomad2

apt-cache search gnomad2; sleep 10; sudo apt-get install gnomad2

First bit just lets you see what it is, then 10 seconds later it installs it, you can hit ctrl+c in this gap if you don't fancy it.

Koen did you enable MTP in Rhythmbox? (preferences)
Among the many features of Rhythmbox, you will find:
Easy to use music browser
Searching and sorting
Comprehensive audio format support through GStreamer
Internet Radio support including last.fm streams
Playlists
Display audio visualizations
Transfer music to and from iPod, MTP, and USB Mass Storage music players
Display album art and song lyrics downloaded from the internet
Play, rip, and burn audio CDs
Automatically download audio podcasts
Browse, preview, and download albums from Magnatune and Jamendo

Its not an IPod though, its a gogear. Gnomad is made specifically for the task of talking to his sort of device as well as others

I am not a total noob on ubuntu. so you can trust me my programs do not see it.

it is because ubuntu ITSELF sees it as an "Removeble Hard Disk".

therefor all other application's do not see it as an MTP-player as well.

i just need to let ubuntu know it is an music player and when he put music-files on it it will work correctly. so i need to mount it as an MTP-player because he does not automatically detect it is an MTP. ( gnomad does not see it either )

i just need to know how i do mount it as an MTP-player instead of an "Removeble Hard Disk".

I don't think Phillips GoGear is compatible with Linux systems. have a look at these couple of links, you need to download some software to make them compatible.
http://tuxmobil.org/player_linux_survey_philips.html

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=197203

hope they help.

well... thx for the suppord.

he does the job using nautilus, but it would be more easy to just use a music-player like banshee to get it to work.

i tough that if jou could tell ubuntu that it is a music-player that will play normal MP3-files, it would work. because it sees it as an removable disk.

if this is possible: please tell me. otherwise i just have to use nautilus for the job and will give up.

The Phillips GoGear is not compatible with Linux systems. The Phillips website says it is only compatible with Microsoft. That is why you need to download some software to make it compatible. If you go to those links in my last post they have the necessary software.

@ lyn

i have tried the software. but is has no result.

but the player can still play the MP3 files i put it on, just like any ordinary usb-mp3player.

problem is just the whole system things it is an ordinary usb-stick. who is not capable of playing mp3-files. I just use nautilus for it now, but if there is a way of letting the system know it is an "digital audio player", let me know. because it is a bit of a pain doing everything with nautilus because i have a lot of junk between my files.

and.... the thing you need windows for is just for firmware updating. it had nothing to do with daily use.

I have a GoGear Aria and same problem.

In MSC mode it shows as mass storage under PHILIPS and is not recognized by either Rhythmbox, Banshee or Exaile (yes I am desperate enough to have all 3).

In MTP mode it still shows up as mass storage, which does not look right (maybe the player reverts back to MSC) and is not to be seen in any of the media players above.

I could live with MSC but it looks like the Aria does not read the album art from ID3 tags in my MP3s for some reason. The ones in the samples provided with the player are ok though, but they might be read from some database populated only under MTP tranfer (wild hypothesis). I tried to convert PNGs to JPGs in mine, reducing the size, no luck.

Well, if anyone had any luck with using the GoGear Aria under Ubuntu (Jaunty 9.04), especially integrating with media players and getting album art to be displayed, I would be much interested. I will do some more testing like deleting the songs provided with the player and adding them back.

@jos
my GoGear does not have a display. and in the instruction manual stands that i just need to copy the MP3-files to it. ( actually, it describe the steps how you copy files in windows, asuming user doesn't know how to copy files XD ).

and i am posting this to re-open question again.

Just a dumb thought... and I know this is old... but, try plugging the device in, open up rhythmbox, unmounting the device (you can do this by right-clicking on the desktop icon) and then it may appear in RB.
