professional support

Asked by Tom

Hi

I have just heard from outsiders that Ubuntu is now offering reasonably priced professional support for Ubuntu at various levels of support
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-327672.html

but it's unclear exactly what people get for the money.
http://shop.canonical.com/index.php?cPath=31_32&osCsid=14559cef877f3a77f91b4efde1a951ca

All three package, including the "Starter Support" for £35 state
    * Live phone support 9x5
    * Email support
    * Security upgrades
    * Product upgrades
    * Duration: 1 year or 3 years

What does "phone support 9x5" mean? If it's 9am-5pm then how does that relate globally? The 3year option is obviously a discount on buying 3 lots of 1year support. Does the "security upgrades" and "product upgrades" mean that these things wont be available without buying into these schemes? Is Ubuntu becoming non-free? Also i hope that some people answering questions in here have been offered some pay for the high level of support they provide in here but i have only heard about this through 3rd parties so it's all a bit of a surprise for me

Good luck all
Regards from
Tom

I'd imagine its 9 hours (9am til 6pm at a guess) 5 days a wekk (monday to friday)

If you have a number for the support line, why not call them to get the info from the horses mouth? Good find though duder, people like the knowledge that they have a line they can call and talk to a human being rather than forums/irc.

Hopefully people looking for this site via web search engines will bump into this and use the awesome link

WTG!!!

I am thinking of buying it for my dad because he likes to have people to shout at down the phone. Until linux can offer that (rather than just fixing people's problems) then he's going to stick with Windows lol

Just because ZDNet talks about it doesn't mean it's something new, in fact it isn't.
btw. making money through support is a bottom line in IT business.

Community support is an essential attitude in the *nix world - philosophy of giving back.
Remember - it's free -.
It's about ZAP (zero aggression principal), nobody is forced to install distri x,y,z, nobody is forced to contribute, but every human is invited to share the experience and fun.

Hence, in contrary of getting paid, I freely choose to compensate contribution of little knowledge by donation.
