Hi,

First please make sure to close all open programs, including all package managers like Synaptic, Add/remove programs, etc ...

Then please try this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo aptitude clean
sudo aptitude autoclean
cd /var/lib/dpkg/info
sudo rm libxcb-shape0.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install libxcb-shape0
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*
sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
sudo dpkg --clear-avail
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo aptitude install -f
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Hope it helps,

Regards,

Mark

You type your user password. The line will remain blank as a security
measure, type it in and hit enter anyway.

Thanks Mark, I was also suffering from the same problem on a new DELL Inspiron Mini 10. I'd logged a call with DELL support, but they were pretty much useless. However, your instructions solved the problem perfectly.

I'm a newbie to Ubuntu ... but reasonably technically minded ... can you explain what your instructions are doing at a high level, and what caused the problem (ie, was it DELL ... or the package?). Also, will that cure the problem in the future, or will I need to go through the same steps each time?

Hi angusmec,

See the bugreport here for details on the problem:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell-mini/+bug/391796

As you can see in the bugreport, it is likely not solved yet.

Not sure who is to blame, but at least we have a working workaround procedure...

What the commands above do, is thoroughly clean up the packages and configuration files used by the aptitude command-line package-manager. It also reinstalls the package libxcb-shape0.

Regards,

Mark

Everything seemed to work except these two commands:

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*
sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists/partial

I wanted to copy and paste the response, but it asked me to restart my system. I got a response after the first command that it could not remove because it is a directory, and after the second command said the directory already existed.

When I tried running updates again, it gave me three errors after checking, but I forgot to copy the errors. Right now it is downloading package files (196 of them) and I am waiting to see if it is successful, or if I get more errors.

That seems to have solved the problem! I was able to update, add a program, and check for new updates with no errors. Thank you!

I found a solution on another forum that seems to be much less intensive. from (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1174821)

cd /var/lib/dpkg/info
sudo rm libxcb-shape0.list
sudo apt-get --reinstall install libxcb-shape0

what do you think?
