Hi,

I have seen a couple of threads with this problem but still I am unable to resolve the issue.

I will directly start with the output of the various steps as specified by Mark in other threads.

1. wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh

Hi,

Please try this procedure:

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. and add these lines to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

3. Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA. Try to make sure that the Intel [HDA Intel] audio device is set as the default playback device in Ubuntu.

4. reboot and retest sound

5. In the Mixer control panel, make sure to unmute all channels and increase the volume on all channels

6. If the dell-m6 alsa-base.conf option does not work, please try one of the following model options, reboot your pc and retest sound:

 STAC92HD73*
   ref Reference board
no-jd BIOS setup but without jack-detection
dell-m6-amic Dell desktops/laptops with analog mics
dell-m6-dmic Dell desktops/laptops with digital mics
dell-m6 Dell desktops/laptops with both type of mics

7. Also try connecting the external speakers to a different audio port on the sound card and retest sound

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks a lot, the sound problem is actually solved. I used dell-m6 in my alsa-base.conf.
But the sound quality is a low, can it be enhanced. I changed all channels volume to max.

Thanks for your prompt answer.

Hi Amy,

Please install gnome-alsamixer.

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste the following commands into the Terminal and then hit <enter> after each line )

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer

Step 3: Run gnome-alsamixer from the Terminal and play with all the volume settings in that mixer.
Make sure all the different speakers (including 'Front', 'Master', and 'PCM") are NOT muted and NOT set to low volume levels.

If you can hear sound now on your pc, I suggest setting this thread to status "solved".

Kind regards,

Mark

Hi everybody,

I have the same problem with my ASUS X5DIJ-SX018L (K50) and Ubuntu 9.04. I tried everything posted here, still it doesn't work.

hwinfo tells me:

    Driver Status: snd_hda_intel is active
    Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe snd_hda_intel"
  Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown

I also tested a sugestion to add an option to "options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=x" with the values changing from 0 to 3 to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf - unfortunately without success.

Thanks in advance!
