How to make thunderbird default email client

Asked by Kayvee

When I right-click on a file in nautilus and choose 'Send To', I see an option to send the file as an attachment via email. However, this can only use Evolution as an email client. In spite of setting Thunderbird as a default email client in my Preferred Applications. How do I fix this?

Go to System > Preferences > Preferred Applications and under Mail Reader choose Custom.

As the "Command" put in:

/usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird "%s"

Let me know if this works.

He's already tried that. It's a problem in Jaunty...

Craig,
I tried your method. It did not help.

Craig,
Sorry about the last message. I did not check properly. You method 'sort of' worked.

Now, when I right-click and choose 'Send To' I still see 'Email (Evolution)' as a choice but clicking on it opens Thunderbird instead of Evolution.

Thank you for the solution.

It may take restarting your Gnome session all together for it to reflect in Nautilus (your file manager).

If this doesn't work, I'm not quite sure why the menu tree isn't updating to reflect the e-mail client change. It should just always say "E-mail This" or "E-mail Using X..."

Weird.

I did not restart the computer, but I logged out and logged back in. In
spite of that it says Email using Evolution. I will keep this in mind
next time I have to restart my computer.
